Pemalang JavaneseResearcher: Uri Tadmor Research Assistants: Regina Yanti and Dalan Mehuli P. The Pemalang dialect is phonologically the most conservative dialect of Javanese. Its vowel system closely resembles that recorded in old manuscripts: final /a/ did not change to /o/, and the two mid vowels did not split into high and low varieties. The original initial /b/ is also preserved in many words where it changed to /w/ in other dialects. Sociolinguistically, too, the dialect is archaic in never having developed speech levels, the hallmark of central Javanese.
