MethodologyAudio recordings are made on location by research assistants, who are normally also native speakers of the relevant language or dialect. The recordings typically involve 1-3 native speakers of various ages, and contain both narratives (such as folk stories) and natural, spontaneous conversations. The recordings are transferred to digital file on computer at the Field Station, and then transcribed and entered into a computerized database, again by native-speaking assistants. Finally, the data are analyzed and glossed by the assistants with the aid of our in-house language coding software (words.FM) and then translated into English.
