Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia

How to Get to Semarang

Depending on where you are arriving from, you can travel to Semarang, Central Java, either by air, train, or bus.

By Air

If you are coming from outside of Indonesia, the two possible transit points to the airport in Semarang (SRG, Achmad Yani International Airport) are Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Otherwise, if you are coming from within Indonesia, transit through Denpasar (Bali), Jakarta, or Surabaya is possible. Lion Air or Garuda may offer flights from additional locations within Indonesia as well.

Via Singapore: AirAsia and Silkair both operate one nonstop flight on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday from Singapore Changi International Airport (SIN) to Semarang (SRG).

Via Kuala Lumpur: AirAsia has one nonstop flight in the early morning on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) to Semarang (SRG). Note that AirAsia fly out of the Low Cost Carrier Terminal, so if you're arriving in Kuala Lumpur on another airline, you'll have to transfer terminals, which takes a bit of time.

Via Jakarta: There are a plethora of flights from Jakarta (CGK) to Semarang (SRG). Lion Air offers nine daily nonstop flights; some are operated by Batik Air or Wings Air, of which Lion Air is the parent company. Garuda also offers nine daily nonstop flights. Citilink offers two daily nonstop flights. Via Surabaya Lion Air offers four daily nonstop flights from Surabaya (SUB) to Semarang (SRG) (operated by Wings Air). Garuda offers two daily nonstop flights.

Via Denpasar: Lion Air offers only one daily nonstop flight in the evening from Denpasar (DPS) to Semarang (SRG). Otherwise, you would transit through Surabaya. Garuda also has one nonstop flight daily at midday. This might be an option for those flying from Australia, since from Australia there are often cheap flights available to Denpasar in Bali.

Traveling from Semarang Airport to Udinus (Universitas Dian Nuswantoro) From Semarang’s Achmad Yani International Airport to near Udinus, the easiest and most convenient way of getting from the airport to your hotel is by taxi. The airport is about 6km west of the town centre. Some taxis are metered, and some are not. All of the white taxis (that have a logo with “Bandara International Achmad Yani” on the front doors) at the airport are metered, which are almost all of them as this company is based at the airport. It will cost about 40-50 000 IDR. You can also check with your hotel about transportation from the airport, as many hotels provide a free airport transfer services. Make sure you have a booking from your hotel.

By Train

You can take the train directly to Semarang from a number places within Indonesia. Get off at Semarang Tawang Station. From Jakarta, the best train service is the Argo Muria (departing 7am) or Argo Sindoro (departing 4pm) from Gambir Station. There is also the Argo Bromo Anggrek Pagi (departing 9:30am), Sembrani (departing 7pm), or Argo Bromo Anggrek Malam (departing at 9:30pm). All take about 6 hours from Jakarta.

From Surabaya, the train only takes about 3 hours, leaving from Surabaya Pasarturi station. You can take the Argo Bromo Anggrek Pagi (departing at 8:30am) or the Argo Bromo Anggrek Malam (departing at 8pm). The Argo trains are the fastest and offer “eksekutif”. Economy trains are Gumarang (departing at 3:30pm), Harina (departing at 4:15pm), Sembrani (departing at 5:50pm), or Kertajaya (departing 9pm). We don’t recommend leaving from Surabaya Gubeng station with the Bangunkarta train, as it takes about 6 hours, departing at 4pm.

You can check the exact schedule at this website. You can buy tickets directly at the train station, or order a ticket from a mini-mart such as Alfamart or Indomart, and then pick up your original ticket at the train station at least one hour before your departure.

By Bus

To the main bus terminal (Terboyo) in Semarang, air-conditioned buses run from Yogyakarta (30 000/40 000 IDR; about 4 hours), Pekalongan (30 000 IDR; about 3 hours), Cirebon (60 000-70 000 IDR; about 6 hours), and Surabaya (40 000/60 000 IDR; about 9 hours). Other economy buses go from smaller city centres. All prices are approximate. You can then take a taxi from the bus terminal to Udinus.
