Other comments: Wayana (Wayâna) is spoken by 1,740 speakers in Marowijne district: upper Tapanahoni river; northwest of Trio language speakers, Suriname as well as Brazil and French Guiana. Wayana only has traditional numerals from one to four. After four they have a word for five which means 'one hand'. Currently, they prefer to use Maroons, or Saramaccan Creole, an English based Creole, numeral system. Note that the symbols 'ë'=IPA [ə]. |
