Other comments: Numèè has a traditional quinary-vigesimal counting system based on 'hand' and 'person', similar to that of Drubea. Nowadays, the Numèè people may use French numbers after five. Sophie Rendina, PhD student, SOAS told me in November, 2009 that most Numèè speakers only seem to remember numbers up to 4. Numèè is a tonal Austronesian language. Numèè is spoken by about 2,000 speakers in Isle Ouen (Ouen dialect); Isle of Pines (Kwényi dialect); Touaouru, Goro, and Yate on south end of main island (Numèè dialect) in South province, New Caledonia. |
