Other comments: Maisin or Maisan has a traditional counting system base on five. Number five means literally ''our (inc) hand on one side'', ten means ''both hands''. Thirty is expressed literally by ''one man, both hands on another man''. However, contemporary Maisin speakers use English terms for all numbers above five. Maisin is spoken by about 2,600 speakers Maisin people of Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. Maisin is a language of Papua New Guinea with both Austronesian and Papuan features. The Austronesian elements are those of the Nuclear Papuan Tip languages. |
