Other comments: Maasai is spoken by approximately 1,800,000 speakers in Kajiado county, Narok county, Kiambu county, Laikipia county and Taita-Taveta county, Kenya and as well as in Tanzania. Maasai has a rather complicated numeral system of counting mixing with traditional numerals with Proto-Kalenjin borrowings. Some numbers in Maasai must indicate gender ( numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9), others are neutral for gender. For numerals that distinguish gender, the default is generally 'feminine' for the lower numerals; for those based on 20 which involve a lower numerals, at least some appear to normally use the masculine form. The above data are based on Southern Maa and the tones need checking with updated data.
