Other comments: Iñapari or Inamari is a moribund language spoken by approximately 4 speakers (1999 SIL) out of 68 ethnic population: 68 (Crevels 2012) in Madre de Dios region: Puerto Maldonado area on Piedras river, mouth of Sabaluyo, Peru. I am currently working with 2 of the last 4 speakers of Iñapari (and hope to make contact with the other 2 in January). All four speakers are siblings. Their father was Iñapari and their mother was Mashco Piro. They were raised speaking Iñapari and unfortunately never learned Mashco Piro because their mother was stolen as a child (~3yo) and didn't speak Mashco Piro herself.
The Iñapari have words for 1-5, 10, and 20. 1: [paːˈtʃi] 2ː [ˈhɛpi] 3ː [maːˈpa] 4ː [ɯmuˈnaʔaʔa] 5ː [ˌpɛnamuˈjuti] 10ː [puˈʔaːniˌmujuti] 20ː [hitʃiˈtipahɯˌnɯ]
5 and 10 appear to be derived from the word mujuti 'hand' and 20 includes the word hitʃiti 'foot'. There is a root pɛna- 'other' and a root puʔani- 'clean', which may suggest an etymology, but the speakers do not consider 5 and 10 to be decomposable to 'other hand' or 'clean hand'. |
