Other comments: Carapana or Carapana-Tapuya, Karapano, Karapaná is spoken by approximately 500 speakers out of 1,000 ethnic population in Vaupés department: Cano Tí (tributary of middle Vaupés river) and upper Pirá-Paraná and Papurí rivers, Colombia as well as Brazil. This group lives in the Vaupés Department of Colombia along the Cano Tí tributary of the middle Vaupés river and upper Pirá-Paraná and Papurí rivers, all branches of the Amazon river. There are about 500 people who speak Carapana as their first language. However, due to the norm of marrying a person from another ethnic group and other factors, there are more than a thousand indigenous people who speak Carapana well. Carapana has a traditional counting goes up to 20 similar to that of the related Tatuyo language. Note: j=IPA [h], c= IPA [k] |
