Other comments: Barí or Baria or Motilón is spoken by approximately 5,000 speakers in Cesar department: Chimichagua, La Gloria, and Pailitas municipalities; Norte de Santander department: Reserva Indígena Motilón-Barí and Resguardo Indígena Gabarra-Catalaura in Upper Catatumbo and Oro rivers and Serranía de los Motilones region, Colombia as well as Venezuela. Barí does not have many number words -- really only three. It is possible to count to higher numbers in Barí, but only by using long compound words combining the words for one to three with the word ahdu, hand. The Bari word for "four," for example, is "ahduĩshkidã intok wa," which literally means "complete hand minus one." Today, most Barí people use Spanish numerals to count higher than three. |
