Hello.  I’m Paul Heggarty, currently working on a linguistics research project which among other things tries to measure the similarity between the various dialects of Quechua in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina, and making some comparisons with Aymara too.

I have a Ph.D. in comparative linguistics at the University of Cambridge, U.K., with a long stay also at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.  Click on these links for a potted biography, or a brief abstract or a fuller description of my Ph.D. research.  The full and considerably revised thesis text is to be published in 2007, but in the meantime you can email me to ask and I will explain how to download the existing unrevised version.

I’m also a founder member of and linguistics advisor to the Jaqmashi Association, set up in June 2003 to support the community of Tupe, home to the last thousand or so speakers of the endangered Andean language Jaqaru.

Why did I set up my Quechua website?  As part of my Ph.D. I spent some months in the Andes learning Quechua. Having seen various requests for info on Quechua language resources, I felt Quechua could desperately do with at least a basic bibliography on the net, and an introduction for linguists to some of the more intriguing aspects of the language.  I’ve also included some practical tips from my own experience learning Quechua in the Cuzco region, including working with the Quechua Academy there (not too impressive – be warned!).  Speakers of other varieties of Quechua please excuse the Cuzco bias of these pages.

I repeat my call for help, suggestions, recommendations, etc.  If you know of a good site I’ve omitted, or a good resource I don't know about and you feel should be advertised, please let me know!  Thanks.
