Other comments: GiTemi has a decimal system. Above are the two documents, the description of Gitemi, which includes the IPA symbols, and the Gitemi numerals. When I asked a Gitemi speaker to check the numerals, he added some numbers that are no longer in use, which I thought was cool. Many of the numbers are closely linked to the Swahili, or proto-Bantu, as in the Swahili ‘elfu’(1000) and Gitemi ‘elufu’. So I was excited to see a word for 1000 with a completely different root ‘loko’. The root ‘–ko’ means ‘firewood.’ Don’t know if there’s a connection, but the image of a bundle of firewood could well be related to an uncountable large sum. Temi or Sonjo is a Bantu language spoken in northern Tanzania, west of Lake Natron by approximately 24,600 speakers. |
