Other comments: Serrano is an extinct language, the last speaker, Dorothy Ramon, died in 2002, formerly spoken in California: south, San Bernardino and San Gorgonio Pass area, United. Serrano has a decimal system. The word 'pɨhpaʔ' on the compound numbers means 'on it losses its final glottal stop before a word beginning in h; this is a regular process. The number 'hundred' sieːntuʔ is a loanword from Spanish. Notes on traditional phonetic symbolsː The vowels with diaeresis (ä, ɨ̈, ö) are retroflexed and pharyngealized; they sound as though they are inflected somewhat by an American English or Northern Chinese r-sound. ' ţ ' as in numbers 5 and 10 is an apico-alveolar affricate, remarkably similar to the t-sound in English two. Phonetic stress is initial. |
