Other comments: Rao or Annaberg is spoken by approximately 6,000 speakers in 40 villages at (Z'graggen, 1975, p.36-37), most of these are situated in the Karam River plains in the north-west of the Madang Province and several villages lie over the border with the East Sepik Province. Z'graggen's (1975) estimate for the Rao-speakers was a total of 4,988. Arthur Capell (1951) has notes on 'Anaberg', i.e. Rao, and these include a smal amount of number data. In addition, a publication by Stanhope (1980) deals with the languages as spoken in seven villages ( in the vicinity of Greenabu village). John M. Stanhope describes the number system as 'scanty': so, too, are available numbers data. The system clearly does not possesses a 2-cycle; further data are required to establish the cyclic structure of the system and its nature of type. According to Stanhope the word for 'arm' is 'mi-ta' and the word for 'hand' is 'mi-gra'. New data needed to compare with the old one. Rao has recorded traditional numerals from 1 to 4 years ago, not sure if they are still using old traditional numbers or body tally after 4 or now use Tok Pisin numerals after 4. New data for numbers after four is required. |
