Other comments: Sayula Popoluca is spoken by a few monolingual speakers of approximately 4,000 ethnic population in south of Sayula, Veracruz state, Mexico. Sayula Popoluca has a vigesimal system. Clark uses s̈ to signify ʃ. The only change I make to Clark’s orthography here is that he underlined a vowel to lengthen it, whereas I simply doubled it. Clark says that during his time among the Sayula Popoluca, “only a few Popolucas who could count above six in their own language. Those few men were over sixty, but could only remember native words for numerals one through ten, for twenty, and for 100.” (Clark 1982). This explains the gaps in the chart above. I include a more historical list of numbers in the chart |
