Other comments: Miamo or Illinois, Miami-Illinois is an extinct language formerly spoken in Indiana: north central (Miami dialect); Oklahoma: northeast (Miami and Peoria dialects), United States. The last fluent speaker died in 1989 (Mithun 1999). Ethnic population: 2,000 (1977 SIL). Miami-Illinois has a decimal system of counting. There is an alternate form for 70, swaˑhteˑthswi-mateˑni. Miami-Illinois was an recently extinct (before 1996) language. Note thatː j=y (palatal glide ); 'h' before a consonant represents pre-aspiration; a raised dot marks vowel length. |
