Other comments: Cross River Mbembe is spoken by approximately 236,000 speakers in Cross River state: Ikom, Obubra, and Yala LGAs; Ebonyi state: Abakaliki and Izzi LGAs, Nigeria. Cross River Mbembe has a vigesimal numeral system with basic numerals 5, 10, 15, 20 and 400. Numbers between 20 and 400 are generated as multiples of 20. The traditional highest term is 400 ''ɛ́nɔhná''. 1000 is expressed by (400 x 2 plus 20 x 10). There are lenis and fortis consonants; t̩, k̩, s̩ and f̩ are fortis. The basic tone system comprises two tone levels, High [á] and Low [à] and a downstep . Note the symbols used between traditional and IPA areː y=IPA [j], j=[d͡ʒ] and ch=IPA [t͡ʃ ]. |
