vowels in Hidatsa.

Vowel length is phonemic. Vowels are either 1) short, or 2) long. Long vowels are
written by means of two identical letters.

Hidatsa is a pitch-accent language. There is no tone or stress. An accent mark over
a vowel denotes the last syllable in the word that is high-pitched, all following
syllables and unaccented words in the word or phrase are pronounced with the
low pitch. A sequence of acute and grave accent marks over a long vowel represents
falling pitch.
