Other comments: Ch’orti’ or Chortiꞌ is spoken by approximately 16,700 speakers out of 112,000 ethnic population in Guatemala: Chiquimula and Zacapa departments; eastern border with Honduras, as well as Honduras. Ch’orti’(Mayan), Jocotán, has a vigesimal system. (numerals 1-4 obtained through elicitation 1975-77; all other numbers are from materials published by the Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín (PLFM), Antigua,Guatemala, 2007 and the Academia de Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala (ALMG); Area Ch’orti’, 2009-2012. When I was in the Ch'orti' area, I worked with 12 speakers. They told me that the numeral system only went up to 4, the remainder being Spanish numerals. Therefore, I can only vouch for 1-4. However, pedagogical materials have more numerals in Ch'orti', but they may be invented by modern speakers. I gave you all that I have, but I'm quite sure that the number 21 is wrong (it is based on 10, not on 20). The system seems otherwise okay. |
