Other comments: The Baka are Pygmies and they only have a simple five-based counting system. They rarely use numbers passed 50. They were a bit confused when asked them larger numbers. The word 'kamo' is used for '10', but they use it also to mean '1000', when they need to count the CFA money. Baka orn Bibaya, Pygmees Baka is spoken by approximately 40,000 speakers in Cameroon (2007 Y. Léonard). 15,000 monolinguals. Mainly women. Ethnic population: 40,000. Total users in all countries: 43,200 speakers in East region: Boumba, Kadey, Ngoko, and Upper Nyong divisions; South region: Dja-and-Lobo division, Cameroon as well as Gabon. |
