Other comments: Awing is spoken by approximately 19,000 speakers in Awing-Bambaluwe village, Mezam division, North West region, Cameroon. Awing has a decimal system. Awing cardinals can be divided into simple and complex cardinals. Simple cardinals consist of the numbers. Complex cardinals results from the combination of simple hundreds or thousands. (1) For
tens, “nə̀ɣə́mə́”
is multiplied by digits from “two” to “nine” to obtain numbers (2) “nə̀ɣə́mə́” : “ten” // “pɛ́”: “two” ⇒ “nə̀ɣə́mbɛ́”: “twenty” “nə̀ɣə́mə̀ ” : “ten” // “kwà”: “four” ⇒ “nə̀ɣə́mnə̀kwá”: “forty”To obtain hundreds “ŋkɛ̀rə́ ” becomes “ŋkɛ̀t” before being multiplied by digitsfrom “two” to “nine” and yields numbers that range from “200” and “900” as the following example show. The morpheme “m?” is absent here. (3) “ŋkɛ̀t ” : “hundred” // “pɛ́”: “two” ⇒ “ŋkɛ̀tpɛ̀”: “two hundreds”“ŋkɛ̀t”: “hundred” // “ténə̀”: “six” ⇒ “ŋkɛ̀tténə̀”: “five hundreds” As far as thousands are concerned, the same process is applied since “tɔ́sə̀ ” has tobe multiplied by digits from “one” “to “nine” to obtain numbers from “2000” to “9000” as evidenced below. (4) “tɔ́sə ”: “one thousand” // “m?oà?fi”: nine ⇒ “tɔ́sə̀nə̀pùʔə́”: “ nine thousands”“tɔ́sə́”: “one thousand” // “tóɣə́”: “six” ⇒ “tɔ́sə̀tóɣə́”: “six hundreds” From “11” to “19”, the complex cardinal is obtained from adding the
digit From “20” to “99”, it is the formula “Tens + nə̀ + Unit” that enables to obtain the complex cardinal. “nə́” literally means “and” in the language. (5) From “101” upwards the connector “nə̀ ” is used to link “hundreds” or “thousands”to their various units. ŋkɛ̀t nə́ tàʔ “101”, tàʔ tɔ́zə̀ nə́ ŋkɛ̀t nə́ tàʔ “1001” ŋkɛ̀t nə́ pɛ́ “102”, tàʔ tɔ́zə̀ nə́ ŋkɛ̀t nə́ pɛ́ “1002” ŋkɛ̀t nə́ térə̀ “103”, tàʔ tɔ́zə̀ nə́ ŋkɛ̀t nə́ térə̀ “1003” ŋkɛ̀tpɛ̌ nə́ pɛ́ “202”, tɔ́zə̀pɛ́ nə́ pɛ́ “2002” ŋkɛ̀t nə́ nə̀ɣə́mbɛ́ nə́ ténə̀ “125”, tàʔ tɔ́zə̀ nə́ nə̀ɣə́mbɛ́ nə́ ténə̀ “1025” Awing is a Grassfields Bantu language spoken by approximately 19,000 speakers in Northwest Region of Cameroon. |
