Other comments: Yonggom is spoken by approximately 20,000 speakers in Fly and Tedi (Alice) rivers and toward Lake Murray, Western province, Papua New Guinea as well as Papua province in Indonesia. Yonggom has a body tally system, moving from one to 5, the wrist, lower-forearm, upper-forearm, inside of elbow, biceps, shoulder, breast, sternum and then moves on to the other side of breast, shoulder, biceps, etc. finger on the other side. Group of six is express by 'wɑt. Now, beyond 8, this system is no longer in use. There is some disagreement among the older men who remember this system. What I have here is preferred by the person I feel most reliable. But others leave out abatkono for a count of 24. Others leave out doknikono and doknikonoyara for a count of 23. |
