Other comments: Samberigi, or Sau, is an Engan language of the Southern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea spoken by about 3,000 speakers. The only data obtained for Sau derive from an SIL word list compiled at Honipolu village in 1975. The Sau number words for 2 and 3, respectively yaapo' and 'tepo', are cognate with the corresponding number words of the Kewa 4-cycle systems. Whereas we might expect the number word for 4 to be identical to or cognate with the word for "hand', as usually found in 4-cycle systems, in fact we find that a 'hand' morpheme appears in the number words for both 5 and 10 which have the sense hand one', 'hands two', 'kiki meaning hand. It may be possible that this is a relatively recent innovation, an original 4- cycle system being modified to a 5-cycle digit-tally one. No data are available to indicate whether there is a Sau body-part system as well, not sure if they are still using old traditional numbers or body-tally system after 10 or now use Tok Pisin numerals after 10. New data for numbers after ten is required.
