Other comments: Narak is spoken by about 3,400 speakers in the north-east of the Western Highlands Province immediately to the south of the Maring-speaking region, Papua New Guinea. The only number data obtained for Narak derive from an SIL word list com at Baura village in 1976 and from one CSQ. The Narak system has a basic numeral set (1,2); both sets of data indicate t contains a 2- morpheme and has an implied '2+1' construction. The SIL data give a '2+2' construction while the CSQ informant has '3+1', i.e. '(2+1)+1'. The n words for both 5 and 10 contain a 'hand' morpheme 'angulo' ('anglo'). The informant gives 20 as containing both a 'hand' and a 'foot' (or 'leg') morpheme we may construe as having the sense of 'the hands and feet (of one man)'. The thus appears to be a digit-tally one with a (2, 5) or (2, 5, 20) cyclic pattern. |
