Other comments: Magi or Mailu is spoken by approximately 8,500 speakers in Central province and Milne Bay province, Papua New Guinea. Magi or Mailu has a quinary system with some Austronesian influence. The numeral 5 itself, 'ima' or 'ima omu', is Austronesian for 'hand' and it seems likely that it is this word has been borrowed and the original Mailu numeral has been displaced. |
