Ternate Malay: Grammar and Texts
Betty Litamahuputty

This CD is appended to the book, entitled Ternate Malay: grammar and texts, a PhD-thesis defended by Betty Litamahuputty at Leiden University, Netherlands, in 2012. The thesis is the result of research conducted between 1992-1996 into a Malay variety spoken in Ternate, a small island in the province of Maluku Utara, in eastern Indonesia. The complete text of the thesis can be found as a PDF-formatted file on the CD.

During two field work periods in Ternate recordings of natural spoken Ternate Malay were collected. One of the recordings, made with a 21 years old Ternate man, forms the main source for the examples to illustrate grammatical features discussed in the book.

Twenty fragments of this recording have been selected and presented here as Ternate Malay Sample Texts. These fragments form small, short stories with several topics. The original recordings were made on audio cassettes and have been digitized into wav- and mp3-formatted files. The audio files are copies of the original recording and have not been edited. The recordings have been transcribed and provided with an interlinear gloss as well as an English translation.

The Ternate Malay – English Wordlist consisting of more than 1400 Ternate Malay entries with an English translation. It forms a list of base words, extracted from the main recording and complemented with a number of words generally heard and used in Ternate. The list is still far from exhausted.
