Here we ask how orientation or motion-to in the transitive motion verb ‘push’ is expressed in comparison to the at-rest situation (’to be at a place’). Is it expressed by a
(i) special motion-to preposition, as in English into: Lea pushed Maria into the hole. This preposition cannot be used in at-rest contexts: Lea is in the hole *Lea is into the hole.
(ii) at-rest preposition used for motion-to: Seychelles Creole Lea ti pus Mari dan trou. ‘Lea pushed Maria into the hole.’ This same preposition is used for at-rest: Lea ti dan trou ‘Lea is in the hole’.
(iii) serial verb construction: Lungwa Santome Maya pinsa kwa pê blaku (Maya push thing put hole) ‘Maya pushed the thing into the hole.’ (For the definition of serial verb constructions as used in the APiCS questionnaire, please see the APiCS Glossary and Feature 84, “‘Come’ and ‘Go’ Serial Verb Constructions”.)
(iv) serial verb construction plus preposition: Nigerian Pidgin English Ìm kom push Uche enta fòr insayd hol (3sgrealis push Uche enter preposition inside hole) ‘S/he pushed Uche into the hole.’
