Add new segments
From Apics
To add a new segment that is not found on our IPA chart (e.g. a geminate consonant, an affricate, or a diphthong, or some other segment type that occurs rarely in languages), please do the following:
- click on an empty cell in the "custom" section in the lower left part of the IPA chart layout;
- this creates a new record in the Segment data table and leads you to the corresponding layout;
- here you need to fill in the Segment data information: give the segment a descriptive name, say whether it is a vowel, a consonants, and an obstruent or not (yes/no), and enter a segment symbol in one of the three segment symbol boxes (recall that there are three boxes because you may not have every font, but the right IPA symbols should display with at least one font);
- in the case of affricates and diphthongs, you should of course enter two segment symbols;
- if you do not have thee right symbol(s) for affricates and diphthongs on your keyboard, you can copy and paste them from other records in the Segment data table
- if this does not help you either, you may enter a placeholder symbol such as the dollar sign or something else, but then you need to describe the segment quite precisely in the Segment name field
