Travel

Airport

The nearest airport is Leipzig/ Halle Airport.
Take the train from Leipzig Airport to Leipzig Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) that runs every 30 minutes.
It will take you approx. 15 minutes to get to the main railway station. A taxi ride from the airport to the city center costs about 30 Euro.

Train

The Deutsche Bahn has an excellent website that finds connections between Leipzig and every european city. Here you can look up the train schedule: Deutsche Bahn.

Leipzig has a very good system of public transport. On the website of the LVB (Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe) you can check which trams/buses you need to take to get to specific places or print out the schedule for the stop nearest to your house/hotel.
Tickets are sold from vending machines at some tram stops, and also from booths on the Augustusplatz and in front of the train station. Tickets need to be stamped in the little orange boxes on the trams/buses when you get on.

The tram stop closest to the Max Planck Institute is the "Deutsche Buecherei", and two tram lines pass:
N°16 (direction "Lössnig") and N°2 (direction "Naunhofer Strasse"), though stopping on different corners.

In Leipzig

Going places: There's quite a lot to do in Leipzig. One good English-language site with a lot of information on what to do in Leipzig is: "Europe for visitors".
For more information about Leipzig check the following web sites: www.leipzig.de (also in English), or www.leipzig-online.de or, once in Leipzig, visit the tourist information office opposite the train station.

Restaurants: A very good site to find restaurants and find out about them (quality of the food, prices, location, etc.) is the following (in German, though): www.kreuzer-leipzig.de. Click on "Leipzig Tag & Nacht" in the right-hand toolbar.
Spring and summer nights in Leipzig mean also 'come together' in Pubs, Bars and Cafes. Notedly famous places are Gottschedstrasse and Barfussgässchen in the city (known as 'mile of pubs') and the south periphery around Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse.
